Millions May Miss Oscars Due To Cablevision-ABC Feud

HuffPo.com:
With a midnight deadline looming on a threat to pull the plug on Cablevision's 3.1 million customers in New York a day before the Academy Awards, there was still no word Saturday night on whether ABC's parent company and the cable operator have reached a decision.

Cablevision Systems Corp. spokesman Jim Maiella (may-EL'-ah) said no update was available on negotiations between the cable operator and the Walt Disney Co. as of about 9 p.m. A Disney spokeswoman didn't immediately respond to a message requesting comment.

Disney is seeking an additional $40 million a year in new fees, according to Cablevision spokesman Charles Schueler. He said the company currently pays more than $200 million a year to Disney.

Disney said Cablevision charges customers $18 per month for basic broadcast signals, but does not pass on any payment for ABC to Disney.

Of course, normal folks know that there's two sides to every story and I could care less about missing the Oscars (too damn long). But here's what I do know: Cablevision has been getting in quite a bit of feuds lately with a variety of networks, not just ABC. And more importantly Cablevision is run by James Dolan, the inept owner of the New York Knicks (no playoff wins in over 10 years) and the New York Rangers (no appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals in 16 years). The latter is the reason why after almost a decade of Cablevision, I switched to Verizon today.

Conservative Democrat Jim Marshall Says ObamaCare Will Bankrupt Country

DailyCaller.com:

Rep. Jim Marshall, a Blue Dog Democrat from Georgia, said Friday that his vote against President Obama’s health-care reform in the fall was “a good vote” which he’ll cast again this time around, citing the legislation’s inability to control skyrocketing costs.

Obama’s proposal will bankrupt the country, Marshall said, during an interview on Fox News.

The president’s plan will only perpetuate current problems with the health-care system because it does nothing to make health-care providers and insurers directly accountable to consumers for the fees they charge for service, he said.

“The problem here is we’ve disconnected consumers, patients and physicians from cost considerations too much,” Marshall said in an interview on Fox News. “People are very concerned about cost; I’m concerned about cost. If you just do more of the same, which is largely what this does, more third party pay, that’s basically what the problem is here, then you’re going to get continued explosive costs.”

Marshall also said, “The reason it costs so much is because of the current structure. If you do more of the current structure, it’s just going to cost more. I think people realize that. People also realize that we’re bankrupting the country over this…the next generation is going to be buried in debt.” When questioned if this would happen if the current bill was signed into law Marshall answered, “That is my opinion.”

Obama has argued that his proposal reduces the deficit by $132 billion over the first decade, citing a report from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). Republicans counter that the bill that passed the Senate — Obama’s proposal has yet to be scored by CBO — uses tricks and gimmicks to arrive at that number.

Rep. Paul Ryan, Wisconsin Republican, has said the bill’s true impact would be to add $460 billion to the deficit in the first 10 years.

Marshall said he and many other of the 38 House Democrats who voted against the bill in the fall will continue to oppose it, but acknowledged that the president will use his bully pulpit and other tools at his disposal to lean on lawmakers to support it.

Democrats are facing a number of obstacles in their quest to get a bill through Congress.

Bill O'Reilly Slams Hollyweird Liberal Tom Hanks

Newsbusters.org:
Bill O'Reilly fired back at Tom Hanks on Friday after the Oscar-winning star mocked Fox News on MSNBC earlier in the day.

As NewsBusters previously reported, Hanks was on "Morning Joe" yesterday attacking Fox News, Ann Coulter, and Tea Partiers.

"[H]e goes to a very low rated, left-wing network, where he poses as a producer playing off a video that showed a fight in an Italian TV newsroom," said O'Reilly.

"Now, that doesn't diminish his talent, which is major, but it does make him kind of a mindless partisan."

Texas Judge Says Death Penalty Unconstitutional

FOXNews.com:

A Texas judge in the county that sends more inmates to death row than any other in the nation is apparently taking a stand.

Saying he could assume that innocent people have been executed, state District Judge Kevin Fine ruled in a pre-trial motion in a capital murder case on Thursday that the death penalty was unconstitutional and found himself on Friday facing a torrent of criticism from a string of high-profile Texans including Gov. Rick Perry.

Fine, a Democrat who is heavily tattooed and says he is a recovering alcoholic and former cocaine user, answered some of the criticism during a court hearing Friday.

"To say that I am ignoring precedent or legislating from the bench I think is slightly overreaching," he said.

Fine said there was no precedent to guide him in resolving the issues raised by defense attorneys in a case involving a man accused of fatally shooting a Houston woman and wounding her sister during a robbery in front of their home in June 2008.

Attorneys for John Edward Green Jr. argued Texas' death penalty statute is unconstitutional because it violates their client's right to due process of law under the 5th Amendment since hundreds of innocent people around the country have been convicted and sent to death row and later exonerated.

Good for Judge Fine. Texas has long been the death penalty capital of the country, but enough is enough. Capital punishment doesn't deter crime, it's racist, costs taxpayers more money and it kills innocents.

John Edwards Could Be Headed To Prison

CBSNews.com:
The National Enquirer reports that former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards will soon be indicted by a federal grand jury. Edwards has been mired in scandal since his affair with campaign staffer Rielle Hunter became public in 2008.

According to the Enquirer, the grand jury's charges stem from that relationship.
At issue, according to the Enquirer, is whether there were "possible campaign violations related to paying his mistress Rielle Hunter," who produced some short videos for the Edwards campaign in 2008.

More recently, Hunter has been fighting in court with Andrew Young, a former Edwards aide, over a videotape purportedly showing her and Edwards in a sexual encounter. That video has been turned over to the court and placed under seal.

The National Enquirer, a tabloid, is credited with breaking the news that Edwards had a child with Hunter. Edwards only admitted to being the child's father last month.
While John Edwards was out and about campaigning for President, the liberal media failed to investigate widespread rumors that he was cheating on his cancer-stricken wife Elizabeth. Now, two years later, Edwards could be looking at some time in the pokey while his enablers get off scot-free. Irony.

Democrat Congressman Bart Stupak Stands Up For Principles, Wants Abortion Out Of ObamaCare

NYTimes.com:

Representative Bart Stupak, Democrat of Michigan and a leader among House Democrats who oppose abortion rights, said on Thursday that President Obama needs to be “more flexible” on tightening abortion restrictions in the big health care legislation.

In a television interview, Mr. Stupak said that many House Democrats do not support the Senate version of the health care legislation that they would probably need to adopt before approving changes through a budget reconciliation measure.

“In the present form, the Senate health care bill is going nowhere in the House of Representatives,” Mr. Stupak said. “Not only do the members of the House of Representatives do not agree with the Senate bill — the process by which the Senate bill was passed, the special deals, there is no member that wants to vote for that.”

And he warned that House leaders had not yet explained the process by which House Democrats could approve both the Senate bill and a package of changes to it.

Finally, a Democrat standing up to liberal terrorism.

Jay Leno Crushes David Letterman In Return To "Tonight Show"

WSJ.com:

About 6.6 million people watched comedian Jay Leno's return to hosting NBC's "The Tonight Show" Monday evening, topping his closest rival, David Letterman, who drew 3.8 million viewers on CBS, according to early Nielsen Co. data provided by NBC.

It was a solid start for Mr. Leno, who said "It's good to be home" in his opening monologue. The comedian's first-night guests included actor Jamie Foxx and skier Lindsey Vonn.

Mr. Leno returned to "The Tonight Show," displacing former host Conan O'Brien, after NBC axed his short-lived "The Jay Leno Show" from prime time. His comeback benefited from promotion during the Olympics and TV executives had anticipated a big first outing. Mr. Leno's real test will be how well he performs in coming months, they said.

Mr. Leno surpassed the 2.9 million that Mr. O'Brien attracted, on average, during the nearly eight months he spent hosting "Tonight," according to Nielsen figures. But Mr. Leno's first-night audience was lower than the number who watched Mr. Leno's last "Tonight Show" in May, or Mr. O'Brien's first show as host in June.

An NBC spokeswoman said it spent less to promote Mr. Leno's new launch than it did for the previous changeover, calling this launch "low key."

Funny, all those leftwing TV pundits who screamed that Leno was done.

Bunning has to know this doesn't good for him or his party, but what does he care? He's retiring at the end of his term anyway. Sane Republicans have to continue preaching in his ear, reminding him that both American Democrats and Republicans are suffering out there due to the Obama recession. Challenge the deficit and Barry's huge spending all you want, but not at the expense of people's livelihood. This has gotten insane and it only helps the Left's argument that the GOP is nothing but the "Party of NO".

GOP Congressman Jim Bunning Halts Unemployment Benefits

FOXNews.com:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid plans to get around Sen. Jim Bunning's objections to a $10 billion jobless aid bill by moving straight to the much-larger $100 billion permanent version of the bill this week, sources told Fox News on Monday.

The Kentucky Republican had objected to the smaller, stopgap bill over concerns about its effect on the budget deficit. That objection threatened unemployment benefits for 400,000 Americans and, according to the Department of Transportation, triggered the furlough Monday of 2,000 transportation workers -- since the bill would have also extended federal highway and transit programs. Federal transit money, however, is included in the $15 billion jobs bill that passed the Senate and is awaiting approval in the House.

The stopgap measure also cut Medicare reimbursements to doctors by 21 percent, since it also funded the so-called "doctor fix" that adds to the deficit.

In his objection, Bunning said had Reid not blown up the bipartisan jobs bill into separate parts, the temporary measure would have been affordable.

But Republican Senate sources said Reid plans to move directly to the permanent version of the bill which, for procedural reasons, Bunning cannot block.

Really now, if you're going to preach that Barry and liberal minions should be concentrating on the economy and jobs (rightfully so) instead of healthcare "reform", stopping unemployment benefits makes you come off as a hypocrite.

Nancy Pelosi Gives Ethics Violator Charles Rangel A Pass

Politico.com:

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi won't consider removing Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel from his powerful post before the ethics panel wraps up a wide-ranging investigation of the New York Democrat.

Some fellow Democrats would like Rangel to step aside as chairman in the wake of the ethics ruling. But the speaker continues to stand by Rangel after the House ethics committee slapped him on the wrist for violating House rules by accepting trips to the Caribbean that were sponsored, in part, by corporations.

It is a public admonishment," Pelosi said in a taped interview airing Sunday on ABC's "This Week." "It said he did not knowingly violate House rules. So that gives him some comfort."

Pelosi said she wants to wait until the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct, informally known as the ethics committee, completes its work before she will make any decisions about whether Rangel should retain his chairmanship on the powerful tax-writing committee.

"What Mr. Rangel has been admonished for is not good," Pelosi said, according to an advance transcript of her remarks. "It was a violation of the rules of the House."

But she said, his actions were not "something that jeopardized our country in any way."

How bad is this? When even the NYTimes wants Rangel to be stripped of his Ways and Means chairmanship, you know something's not right.
