House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she has the votes to pass legislation overhauling the U.S. health- care system as Democratic Party leaders moved closer to an agreement with rebellious members of their own party."Making progress" means Pelosi just needs a little more time to payoff the Blue Dogs' favorite special interest groups and get them on her side. After all, Nancy hasn't even scheduled a vote, but she's screwed over Blue Dogs before and she'll do it again if it means satisfying her leftwing, abortion-loving constituency back home in San Francisco. Any wonder she's shown little regard about the oppositions concerns for a healthcare reform package that would mandated taxpaper funding for abortions. Indeed, conservative Democrats don't need any other reason for sticking to their guns than that. But will they?
Leaders are “making progress” with Democrats who want more cost cuts in the legislation, Pelosi told reporters in Washington today, a day after President Barack Obama met with a group of Democrats to try to convince them to back the plan.
“I have no question we have the votes on the floor of the House to pass this legislation,” Pelosi said.
House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman said he plans to meet with members of the Blue Dog Coalition of fiscally conservative Democrats again today after the group moved closer to consensus on health-care legislation.
“We want to reach an agreement and go to markup in our committee,” possibly as early as tomorrow, said Waxman. “We have not resolved our issues, but we are getting close.”
