Tony Dungy: Person of the Week

Age:
52

Birthplace: Jackson, Michigan

Claim To Fame: Head coach of Indianapolis Colts

Why He's Person of the Week: for assertively
making the proclamation that his faith played a huge role in his decision to return as football coach of the Indianapolis Colts Thursday. Said Dungy:

On Monday, the deeply religious Dungy, who has published a memoir on how his Christian faith has affected him on and off the field, said he felt coaching was the best pulpit for his message.

"I enjoy my job, the players, the staff we have here and Bill (Polian) and Jim," Dungy told reporters. "But it is a platform and that's something I talked to my wife and pastor about. I said 'I could stop and start a ministry, but I might not have a platform like this.'"

"I look at this as a job," he said, "but I also look at it as a ministry ... I might not have as effective a ministry as I have right now."

Dungy, a highly successful coach who just won a Super Bowl last year, has been derided in the past by the liberal press for his openly Christian views, but thank goodness that hasn't held back from expressing how he feels. Granted, even the recent hardship of losing his son hasn't dented Dungy's faith. And by teaching character, humility, giving thanks to God instead of themselves and the importance of family.to his players, Tony Dungy has proven to be a great leader that the Colts are very fortunate to have as their head coach for at least another year.
