Nola Ochs, 95, Graduates From College

Proof that you're never too old for anything:
You may have to be a smart kid to make it at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas, but all you need is a nursery education to tell you which one of the kids is not like the others.

Her name is Nola Ochs and she’s 95 years old.

"I came up here as a senior,” she told CBS News correspondent Steve Hartman for Assignment America.

“I know you did,” Hartman said.

“A college senior," Ochs explained.

Ochs came to Hays last fall for the final leg of what has been the longest college career in history.

To see exactly how long, you have to go to the basement of the administration building, where you’ll find a little 3 x 5 card that shows Nola Ochs – then Nola Hill – started a correspondence course called Directed Study April 19th, 1930.

That’s 77 years ago.

"There's a great satisfaction in completing what you started," Ochs said.

Person of the Week: Trent Lott

Age: 65

Birthplace: Grenada, Mississippi

Why He's Person of the Week: The idea that any American wary of the war in Iraq is unpatriotic is a dumb one because this feeling isn't just being felt by liberals, but by most Americans. As someone who agreed with the decision going after Saddam Hussien 4 years ago, I too have grown wary of a war that no one (including President Bush) thought would still going on today. I too have grown wary reading about our soldiers being killed everyday in Iraq, over 3,000 strong now. I too want to see more results in Iraq and that's why I totally agree with the honest remarks Trent Lott made this week regarding Bush's recent troop "surge": ""I do think this fall we have to see some significant changes on the ground, in Baghdad and other surrounding areas. By the time we get to September or October, members are going to want to know how well this is working, and if it isn't, what's Plan B."

This isn't about leaving Iraq. We made a promise to the Iraqi people to establish democracy, help them rebuild their country as well as assist them in the war on terrorism and we should keep it. We'd be hypocrites to promote democracy here while ignoring the threat to democracy that exists in other countries around the world. But the time has long past come for the Iraqi government and army to step up to the plate and take more responsibility for what's going on in their country. That some Republicans are demanding to see more results in Iraq isn't about going along with the "surrender" crowd, it's about common sense and our troops.

Stupid "Free Paris" Rallies Are A Bust

This is yet another example of the idiocy you have to deal with living here in New York City.

New York City isn't losing any sleep over Paris Hilton's impending incarceration.

"Free Paris Hilton" rallies in two Manhattan locations Thursday had a combined turnout of roughly eight participants, a throng of journalists, and a Paris double.

Despite the lack of supporters, the event's lead organizer said he's not disappointed." Although the physical turnout wasn't huge today, the online support has been tremendous," said David Seaman, the lead organizer of "Free Paris Hilton Now."

Thank goodness common sense still means something in this country.

Giuliani Gave Money To Planned Parenthood

More reasons he should never be looked at a conservative, much less ever compared to Reagan:

GOP rivals pounced on former New York mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani this week after fumbling explanations of his support for abortion rights again exposed his biggest vulnerability in the quest for the Republican presidential nomination.

Giuliani's rambling and sometimes contradictory responses on abortion during last week's Republican presidential debate in California provided an opening for the other GOP hopefuls, including Sen. John McCain (Ariz.), who declared Monday that an abortion rights candidate violates one of the "fundamental principles of a conservative."

That was followed up Tuesday by the revival of stories noting that Giuliani had contributed to Planned Parenthood in the 1990s, sparking outrage on conservative blogs and a lengthy, uncomfortable appearance on Laura Ingraham's radio program.

"When you have a cut on your leg and it's bleeding slightly, you don't go into shark-infested waters," noted a top strategist for a rival campaign, who spoke on the condition of anonymity in commenting about another candidate's weaknesses. "On this, in particular, he is way outside the mainstream of the Republican Party."

Giuliani can try to run away from his pre-9/11 past all he wants to, but the American voter is too smart to buy it. And remember, it was TIME magazine that first had the gall to brand him "America's Mayor"--the same publication that just put the likes of Brad Pitt, Justin Timberlake and Rosie O'Donnell in it's "Top Most Influential" list.

Angela McGlowan Quote of the Day!

“The liberal agenda’s future success hinges on its ability to create a grievance culture of victimhood and dependency, with a ‘blame America first attitude’. Through the creation of a labyrinth of government programs, bureaucracies, the mainstream media and the ‘Hip Hop’ crew’s glorification of the ‘gangsta life’, liberals have successfully oppressed women, the poor and people of color, essentially sapping their drive for self-reliance by creating a dependency-inducing welfare culture.”
