Why's He's Person of the Week: For reaching a deal with the Senate on the long contentious issue of immigration reform yesterday. By coming to terms with Democrats (even liberal asses like Ted Kennedy), Bush not only did what's best for the country, but he once again showed that he's not as stubborn as many make him out to be. The bipartisan agreement is a fair step in the right direction concerning a problem that's been going on long before Bush took office. And for those on the Right still crying about this amounting to nothing but "amnesty"?
Well, get over it!
To blame Bush for illegal immigration and act like he's just supposed to grab a net, scoop up every illegal immigrant in the country and toss 'em out is dumb. President Bush has done a lot to secure the borders and for yahoos like Michelle Malkin (always complaining, but rarely offering solutions) to continue to cry "Amnesty! Amnesty!" are just choosing to be ignorant of the facts.
Since Bush took office, funding for border security has increased immensely and the Border Patrol has been expanded to more than 12,000 agents, an increase of more than 2,700 agents, or nearly 30 percent. The President's FY07 budget funds another 1,500 new agents. Agents are being provided with cutting-edge technology like infrared cameras, vehicle barriers & fencing in urban areas, advanced motion sensors, and unmanned aerial vehicles. Plus, the administration's Border Security Strategy is getting results.
Since President Bush took office, agents have apprehended and sent home more than 6 million people entering the country illegally including more than 400,000 with criminal records. Federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement are all working together and more than 600,000 illegal immigrants were apprehended through the Arizona Border Control Initiative last year - an increase of more than 50 percent increase over the previous year. Dare anyone come up with an administration that has a better record on handling illegal immigrants that of Bush's.
